The seminal plasma is rich in fructose, calcium, and certain enzymes but not glucose. Fructose is the main energy source for sperm cells and helps to provide them with the energy to move and fertilise an egg. Sperm cells can use fructose directly without the need for glycolysis, which allows them to obtain energy more quickly and efficiently. Fructose is more resistant to degradation and is therefore more likely to remain available as an energy source for sperm cells as they travel through the female reproductive tract.
