Seth Hukumchand set up the first jute mill in Calcutta in 1917.. Jute is sometimes known as the "golden strand." In 1859, the first Jute Industry facility was established in Rishra, a small town near Kolkata. Bengal has always been a prominent player in jute production. Notable jute-producing centres in Bengal included: Rishra, Bali, Agapara, Titagarh, and Bansberia. Seth Hukumchand was a pioneer in the "Swadeshi Industry'', founding cotton mills (Hukam Chand Mill and Raj Kumar Mill in Indore) and a huge jute mill and iron mill in Calcutta. He was the first Indian entrepreneur to open a jute mill.
