Sex determination in honeybees is based on number of sets of chromosomes an individual receives. Males (drones) are produced from unfertilised eggs and have only one set of chromosomes (haploid), while females (queen or worker) are produced from fertilised eggs and have two sets of chromosomes (diploid). This type of sex determination is called haplodiploidy and is unique to certain insect species like honeybees, wasps and ants.
