Detailed Solution

Shelterbelts have contributed to soil conservation in Western part of India.
The western parts of India, like parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, have desert areas. Shelter belts planted across wind direction in these areas aid in stopping the spread of desert. The Thar Desert of Rajasthan and the isolated desert region of Rann of Kutch have light sandy soil. These soils have very less moisture content, making it easier for winds to carry them. The presence of shelter belts acts as windbreaks and reduces the wind speed. In addition, it depletes the sandy soil carried by the winds, thereby preventing wind erosion and desertification. The vegetation of shelter belts consists of small to medium-sized shrubs.
