Shivaji belonged to the Maratha Kingdom.
The Maratha Kingdom was an essential and powerful regional Kingdom during the 17th and 18th centuries. They created strong opposition to the Mughal authority. And this Kingdom was raised out of this sustained and protracted opposition to the Mughal rule. The famous king of the Maratha Kingdom was Shivaji, born in 1627 and died in 1680. He created a stable Kingdom with the support of powerful Warrior families called Deshmukh. During his fight against the Mughals, he was able to give strong opposition to Aurangzeb. In 1674 he became the king of Maratha and declared himself Chhatrapati Maharaj. After him, Peshwas acted as the successor of the Maratha Kingdom.
