Shudras were considered untouchables. They belonged to the lowest social class during the Mahajanapadas era. Shudras were regarded as untouchables since they provided services for the other three varna types. According to the priest of that time, reading the Vedas was not permitted for Shudras or women. Moreover, Shudras were not allowed to participate in Ashwamedha yagnas since they were holy rituals performed by the rajas through the priest. They were subjected to this discrimination due to their birth in that category.
