Detailed Solution

Since the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, India’s distance from Europe has reduced by 7,000 km.
India has always been a destination for many sailors for its spices, raw materials, and finished goods. In 1498 Vasco de Gama became the first European to reach India. They took a year-long journey from around the Cape of Good Hope, situated at the southern tip of South Africa, and reached India on the Malabar coast. In 1959-69 Suez canal was built, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. It is an artificial or man-made sea-level canal made to reduce the sailing distance between India and Europe by 7000 km.
