Detailed Solution

Sinhala community adopted a series of "Majoritarian" measures. The democratically elected government took majoritarian actions to establish Sinhala dominance. First, a law recognising Sinhala as the only official language and disregarding Tamil was passed in 1956. Second, the regimes developed measures favouring Sinhala candidates for administrative and academic positions. Third, the state was required under a new constitution to safeguard and advance Buddhism. Following one another, these government actions increased Sri Lankan Tamils' sense of estrangement. They believed that their country's language and culture were unimportant to the major political parties headed by Buddhist Sinhala leaders.
