Detailed Solution

Sinhala was declared as the sole official language of Srilanka in 1956.
Srilanka constitutes two major ethnic groups, namely Sinhala speakers and Tamil speakers. The Sinhalese are mostly Buddhists, whereas the Tamils are mostly Hindus and Muslims. Among Tamils, there are two sub-groups. Tamil natives of the country are known as 'Srilankan Tamils'. The rest of the Tamils, whose forefathers came from India as plantation workers during the colonial time, are known as 'Indian Tamils'. A wave of majoritarianism attacked the country's harmony, with Sinhalese people being the majority.
