Detailed Solution

Sinhala was recognized as an official language of Sri Lanka in an act passed in 1956. Sinhala speakers, who make up 74% of the population, and Tamil speakers, who make up 18% of the population, are Sri Lanka's two largest social groupings. After the nation gained its independence in 1948, the leaders of the Sinhala community consolidated their power in the democratically elected government by virtue of their majority, with the intention of establishing Sinhala supremacy. Tamil was not included in a 1956 law that recognized Sinhala as the single official language of the nation. Buddhism was encouraged since most Sinhala speakers were Buddhists. Sinhala speakers were prioritized for employment and educational possibilities. Later, the country's civil war was brought on by these authoritarian measures.
