Detailed Solution

Slav nationalism gathered force in the Habsburg and Ottoman Empires in 1905. Since 1871, the major cause of nationalist unrest throughout Europe was the region known as the Balkans. The Balkans were part of the geographical and racial diversity that makes up modern-day Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Macedonia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Montenegro. The people of this region were largely referred to as Slavs. A sizable portion of the Balkans was governed by the Ottoman Empire. The rise of nationalism in the Balkans and the breakup of the Ottoman empire made the situation volatile. The Balkan people based their demands for political or independence rights on nationality and gave historical evidence that they were independent in the past but later conquered by foreign nations. Therefore, the Balkans' rebellious nationalities considered their battles an effort to regain the freedom that was long lost.
