Detailed Solution

Slavery was finally abolished in 1848.
The Slave trade was in vogue since the 17th century. The French merchants used to sail from different
coasts of Africa and bought slaves from the local chief there. Throughout the 18th century, no one thought about the pathetic condition of slaves, they were simply living their miserable lives. There were debates in the National Assembly about the rights of man to be extended to all the French subjects including those living in the colonies but it never became law as they feared that it would be against the businessmen whose incomes depended on the slave trade. Finally, in 1794, there was a convention to free all slaves in French colonies but later on, slavery was re-introduced by Napoleon. It was finally in 1848 that slavery was abolished.
