Smog is due to unburnt hydrocarbons which are oxidized to RCHO and RCOR which in tum combines with NO, forming PAN (peroxyacetylnitrate, RCO3NO2). If catalytic converters are used in automobiles, and ratio of air and fuel is in a ratio to release CO and unburnt hydrocarbons in small amount, then smog formation is controlled.
