Detailed Solution

Concept: The endoplasmic reticulum is classified into two categories based on the presence or lack of ribosomes.

The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER) is a membrane organelle found in virtually all eukaryotic cells.

It is a subsection of the endoplasmic reticulum's endomembrane system. Its primary tasks include lipid synthesis, steroid hormone synthesis, detoxification of toxic metabolic wastes, and calcium ion storage and processing within the cell.

The absence of membrane-bound ribosomes distinguishes the smooth ER from the other components of the endoplasmic reticulum.

This organelle is also physically distinct, with tubular features known as cisternae.
