Soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long-chain fatty acids like: a) Palmitic acid, b) Oleic acid, c) Stearic acid.
Long-chain fatty acids are carboxylic acids that contain a hydrocarbon chain of 12 to 18 carbon atoms.
The most common fatty acids used in soap making are palmitic acid (C16), oleic acid (C18:1), and stearic acid (C18).
These fatty acids are obtained from animal or vegetable sources, such as tallow, coconut oil, or palm oil.
During saponification, the fatty acids are reacted with an alkali, such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH), to form the corresponding soap.
The soap molecules have a polar head, which is hydrophilic (attracted to water), and a nonpolar tail, which is hydrophobic (repelled by water).
This structure allows soap molecules to dissolve in water and interact with both water-soluble and oil soluble.
