Detailed Solution

The given statement is True.

Soap is a sodium salt or potassium salt of long-chain fatty acids. They have cleansing action in the water. They are used to remove dirt, and oil from the skin and clothes. The soap does not lather in hard water. The hard water contains calcium and magnesium salts. When soap is dissolved in hard water, the sodium or potassium ions from soap are displaced by the calcium and magnesium ions of hard water forming insoluble precipitates of calcium and magnesium salts known as scum. Hence, soap does not work in hard water.
