Social Contract' was authored by Jean Jacques Rousseau.
French rationalist philosophy took a radical turn with the introduction of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He despised the dry rationalism of the philosophers and emphasized that good feelings were important along with good thinking. In his writings, he vented his contempt for the selfishness and cunning of the rich and educated. In his essay What Are the Roots of Men's Inequality, Rousseau shows how vanity and greed corrupt men. Rousseau had a strong belief in human dignity and goodness. In his book The Social Contract, he investigated the origins of state and government. He adopted Lock's main proposition of the state of nature, the idea of a contract, and the sovereignty of the people. He said that government, law, and state are the result of a contract with the people. The collective will of the so-called common will is the sovereign power. The king remained on the throne with the obligation to abide by the contract. If the king fails in his duty, the contract is broken and the general can fire him. People have the right to rebel against a bad government.
