Down’s process is the most popular industrial method used to manufacture both sodium and chlorine. This process involves electrolysis of molten sodium chloride (NaCl), which results in the release of sodium at cathode and chlorine at anode respectively. The melting point of only sodium chloride is very high, therefore to make this process feasible, KF and KCl added in order to decreases the melting point of the mixture.
