Magnetic susceptibility is the property of the substance which shows how easily a substance can be magnetized.

Soft iron has low retentivity and high susceptibility to magnetism. Electromagnets are made using soft iron. Because electromagnetic materials should acquire magnetic properties quickly(high susceptibility) and as the current flow ceases, the material should stop behaving as a magnet(low retentivity).
