Detailed Solution

Some colonies in Punjab were known as the Canal colonies.
A global agricultural economy had developed by 1890, along with complex changes in how people moved around, money moved, ecosystems worked, and technology originated. Food was transported by ships that were increasingly crewed in these decades by low-paid workers from southern Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean and by railways explicitly built for that purpose. West Punjab saw some of this drastic change, but on a lesser scale and closer to home. Here, the British Indian government constructed an irrigation system to convert semi-desert wastelands into productive agricultural lands where wheat and cotton could be grown for export. Peasants from various regions of Punjab settled in the areas watered by the new canals, known as the Canal Colonies.
