The traditional Harappan seal was 2 by 2 square in outline. The seals may have been applied for commercial purposes. Some people also carried seals as amulets, perhaps as a means of identification. Every seal features an image of an animal with writing in a pictorial script on it (which has yet to be deciphered). There are notable depictions of tigers, elephants, bulls, bison, goats, and other animals. For the most part, seals have writing on both sides. The text is written in Kharosthi (right to the left). Some seals were probably used for educational purposes because they included mathematical symbols. The Pashupati Seal of the Harappan or Mohenjo Daro is the most well-known seal.
