Detailed Solution

Sound waves are longitudinal waves.
A sound wave propagates by creating different pressure in the air as it moves. The volume of air with high relative pressure is known as the region of compression, and the volume of air with low relative pressure is known as the rarefaction region. A single sound wave consists of one compression and one rarefaction region. The oscillation and propagation of the sound wave are in the same direction; hence it is a longitudinal wave.
