Sound waves are also called mechanical waves.
A mechanical wave needs a material medium like air, water, and metals for its propagation. Sound waves also need a medium to propagate. When sound waves travel through the air, they propagate in high pressure regions called compressions, and low pressure regions are called rarefaction. A sound wave is the pattern of disturbance caused by the movement of energy travelling through a medium. Hence, sound waves are also called mechanical waves.
