Spermatids transform into spermatozoon by differentiation (spermiogenesis). The process includes:

• Formation of a head region, containing the nucleus with condensed chromatin material and the acrosome, which contains enzymes necessary for penetrating the egg during fertilization.
• Development of a midpiece, which contains mitochondria to provide energy for sperm motility.
• Elongation of a tail, or flagellum, which enables sperm to swim toward the egg.
