Spinning Jenny was introduced in 1764. It allowed a worker to operate many spindles and spin multiple threads simultaneously by turning a single wheel. However, women workers in Britain criticised the Spinning Jenny when it was introduced to the woollen industry because it speed up the spinning process and as a result, reduced the need for labour. Women employed in the woollen industry experienced a justifiable fear of layoffs as a result of this. They had relied up to now on hand spinning, but the new machine threatened this.
