The "Spinning Jenny", invented by James Hargreaves, completely altered how cotton is spun.
One of the main innovations in the early Industrial Revolution's industrialisation of textile production was the spinning jenny, a multi-spindle spinning frame. Hargreaves designed the concept as an eight-spindle wooden structure with a metal frame at one end. On that frame, a beam held a set of eight rovings. When stretched out, the rovings were able to pass through two horizontal wood bars that could be fastened together. The operator could now spin eight threads at once by rotating a single wheel, as the machine used eight spindles to which the thread was spun. James Hargreaves received a patent for the hand-powered spinning jenny in 1770.
