Spore formation is similar to fragmentation.

Spirogyra, a type of algae found in waterbodies, reproduces by fragmentation. The parent organism's body splits into at least two fragments, each of which develops into a new individual. 

When the process is continued and water and nutrients are available, a large area is covered in a short amount of time. 

When the parent is old enough, fragmentation happens.
