Sri Lanka adopted Buddhism as its official religion. It is a majoritarian policy as the country has a diverse population. The main social groups are Sinhala speakers (74%) and Tamil speakers (18%). Sinhala speakers are mainly Buddhists, but most Tamils are Hindus or Muslims. About 7 per cent of Christians are both Tamils and Sinhalese. The Constitution and other laws require that Buddhism be "prime" in the country's religious beliefs and protect "Buddhism" while respecting the rights of the religious minority. It was a policy initiated by the then Sinhala-dominated government.
