Detailed Solution

Sri Lanka emerged as an independent country in the year 1948. The government has a diverse population. The major social groups are the Sinhala speakers, who comprise 74 per cent of the population, and Tamil speakers, who comprise 18 per cent of the population. Following independence, the leaders of the Sinhala community established their dominance in the democratically elected government by their majority, intending to develop Sinhala supremacy. Consequently, the Sri Lankan Tamils launched parties and struggled to assert their rights. However, they felt that the majoritarian rule thus established was not sensitive to their needs and feelings. This resulted in conflicts and other civil wars in Sri Lanka.
