Detailed Solution

Srilanka’s official language was changed to Sinhala. An Act was passed in 1956 to recognise Sinhala as the sole official language, ignoring Tamil. The governments implemented preferential procedures that favoured Sinhala applicants for academic and government positions. A new constitution mandated that the state safeguard and promote Buddhism.
All of these government policies, one after the other, contributed to a growing sense of estrangement among Sri Lankan Tamils. They believed that none of the major political parties run by Buddhist Sinhala leaders cared about their language and culture. They believed that the constitution and government policies denied them equal political rights, discriminated against them in job applications and other chances, and ignored their concerns.
