Therefore, the name St. Petersburg was derived from German. St. Petersburg was called Petrograd by the Imperial administration. However, the term "Petrograd" was only used for ten years, from 1914 to 1924. After Lenin died in 1924, the city's name was changed to honour his accomplishments. St. Petersburg was a maritime city with a naval base and railroads. Because it was an industrial powerhouse, the city had a significant impact.
