The Ahom kings were called Swargadeos. The Ahom Kings, who had to be descended from the first king Sukaphaa, were known as Swargadeo. Primogeniture was typically the rule for succession, although on rare occasions, the great Gohains may choose a different Sukaphaa descendant from a separate line or even remove an incumbent. The first Ahom ruler to use a Hindu name in tandem with his Ahom name was Suhungmung. The Hindu name he assumed was 'Swarga Narayan'. Later, he and his heirs adopted the Assamese name Swargadeo, which means "the Lord of Heaven." They backed the Brahmanical Sattras and hated the Mahanta and followers of the Sudra Mayamara Satra.
