The first Indian Forest Act was passed in 1865. The British government invited Dietrich Brandis from Germany for his advice to protect forests and resources. As a result, Brandis became the first Inspector General of Forests in India and helped the British government to frame the first Indian Forest Act in 1865. The Act divided forests into three categories depending on their resources: Reserved, Protected, and Village. Reserved forests were the best quality forests which only the government could use. The Act denied the villagers any right to take anything from these forests, even for personal use. Villagers were allowed to collect wood for fuel and house building from the protected or village forests.
