Tipu Sultan was the king of Mysore. One of the most powerful kings in ancient India was the Tipu Sultan of the Mysore empire. He was referred to as the Mysore Tiger. He began as a British ally during their reign, but his disputes with the Marathas and the King of Travancore turned him into one. He was hesitant to accept the British East India Company on his territory because he had fiercely battled their takeover of southern India. In the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War, he was slain, protecting his capital Srirangapatnam after engaging Company forces four times between 1767 and 1799.
