EVM stands for Electronic Voting Machine. It is a portable instrument required for conducting elections. It is used in elections to parliament, the legislature, and local bodies like panchayats and municipalities. An EVM comprises a control unit (placed with the polling officer) and a balloting unit (set within the voting compartment). EVMs run on standard batteries. It does not require electricity. If an EVM stops working, it has to be replaced with a new one. The control unit stores the result in memory until the data is cleared. Changing the paper rolls within EVMs is strictly prohibited.
