  • Based on their location, meristems are classified into three types:
  • Apical meristems : Meristem that occurs in tips of roots and stem. It helps in linear growth of the plant body. E.g., Root apical meristem, shoot apical meristem.
  • Intercalary meristems : Meristem that occurs between two permanent tissues. It helps in regeneration of parts removed by herbivores.
    E.g., Grasses.
  • Lateral meristems : Meristems occurs in lateral sides of plant body. It helps in radial growth of plant parts.
    E.g., Vascular cambium and cork cambium.
