Detailed Solution

The SI unit of work is Joule (J). In physics, work is said to be done when a force is applied on an object and the object is displaced in the direction of the applied force. Work is given by: Work = Force × Displacement × cos θ

Here, θ is the angle between force and displacement.

SI Unit Explanation

  • Force is measured in Newtons (N).
  • Displacement is measured in meters (m).
  • Thus, Work = Newton × meter.
  • 1 Joule = 1 Newton × 1 meter (1 J = 1 N·m).

Meaning of One Joule

Work done is said to be 1 Joule when a force of 1 Newton displaces an object by 1 meter in the direction of force.

Examples

  • Lifting a book from the ground to a table involves work.
  • Pushing a trolley across a floor is work done.
