Detailed Solution

There are numerous classifications for compounds, such as organic and inorganic compounds, to make studying them simpler. Hydrocarbons, or compounds with a lot of carbon and hydrogen atoms, are the focus of most research on organic substances. Methane, ethane, propanoic acid, ethanol, and other hydrocarbons are examples.

As a hydrocarbon gas, natural gas is sometimes referred to as fossil gas or simply as gas. The main component or element of natural gas is methane, whose chemical formula is CH4. Methane is the most abundant of the higher alkanes found in natural gas. Numerous substances, including hydrogen sulphide (H2S), nitrogen (N2), carbon dioxide (CO2), and others, are present in trace amounts.

Natural gas falls under the category of fossil fuels since it is created when layers of plant and animal breakdown are subjected to high heat and pressure. Fossil fuels are non-renewable hydrocarbon gases, hence this is one of them. Carbon dioxide gas, which is released as it burns, contributes to global warming, but not to the same extent as coal.

So, the statement natural gas is a hydrocarbon is true.
