Women participated in the Civil Disobedience Movement on a large scale. Thousands of women participated in the salt march, manufactured salt, picketed foreign clothes and liquor shops, and many even went to jail. These women were from high-caste educated families in urban areas, e.g., Sarojini Naidu, Kamala Nehru, and Satyavati Devi. In rural areas, women came from upper-class peasant households. In 1930, women rallied outside Bethune College, Calcutta, supporting the Civil Disobedience Movement. In addition, influenced by Gandhi’s idealism, a large section of women of the Gujarati community participated in the national campaign in Bombay. All of these participants were symbolic, as women had previously held no positions of authority.
