We are aware that carbon forms a triple-bonded molecular lattice with covalent bonds in graphite. The carbon atoms are arranged in layers with a hexagonal configuration. Weak intermolecular Van der Waals interactions keep these layers of carbon atoms together.
The layers can easily slide over one another with very little friction since the interlayer linkages between them are so weak. Because the layers cleave between the layers of the equipment and make the surfaces soft and slippery, preventing wear and tear, it is employed as a dry lubricant in machinery.
