The Narmada river originates in the Amarkantak plateau of Madhya Pradesh, and the Tapi river originates from the Multai reserve forests in Madhya Pradesh. Narmada flows through the rift valley formed between the Vindhya and Satpura ranges. The Tapi river has the Satpura range to its north, Satmala hills and Ajanta Range in the south, Mahadev hills to its east, and the Arabian Sea to its west.
