Peninsular rivers have shorter and shallower courses. They originate from the mountain ranges in the Eastern and Western Ghats and the peninsular plateau. They depend on the monsoon and are seasonal. They have high water content during the rainy season and have shallower and shorter courses compared to the huge Himalayan rivers. Some rivers originating in the Central Highlands, like Narmada and Tapi, flow towards the west and drain into the Arabian Sea. Most peninsular rivers flow eastwards and drain into the Bay of Bengal. Krishna, Kaveri, Godavari, and Mahanadi are some of these rivers. The tributaries of peninsular rivers are shorter and less numerous and do not increase the water content of the rivers.
