Aldol condensation can be catalysed both by acids and bases. The alpha H atom is acidic in nature.
β Hydroxy aldehydes or ketones readily undergo acid catalysed dehydration to form alpha beta unsaturated carbonyl compound. Alpha beta unsaturated carbonyl compound is stabilised as the newly formed C=C double bond is conjugated with carbonyl group.
