Detailed Solution

  • Frenkel defect in ionic crystal arises when some ions (generally cations) leave their normal lattice sites and occupy the interstitial sites.
  • It is generally observed in ionic solids with low coordination number, and anions are much larger than cations.
  • It is observed in halides like AgCl, AgI, ZnS.
  • As Ag+ is much smaller in size than Cl- ion, so as to fit into interstitial positions.
  • This is due to large difference in the size of Ag+ and halide ions.
