Reaction of oxalic acid with acidified KMnO4​ requires heat to proceed as oxalic acid is less soluble and should be warmed slightly so that reaction proceeds with faster speed.

In acidic conditions, KMnO4 is reduced to Mn2+ ion while oxidizing other substances present in the reaction mixture. The oxidation state of manganese in KMnO4 is +7, which is its highest oxidation state. The MnO4- ion can easily accept electrons, thereby oxidizing other substances present in the reaction mixture. The reduction of KMnO4 to Mn2+ ion results in a change in color from purple to colorless. Hence, acidified KMnO4 is commonly used as an oxidizing agent in various chemical reactions.
