RNA hydrolysis is a reaction in which a phosphodiester bond in the sugar-phosphate backbone of RNA is broken. The products formed from hydrolysis of RNA is d-ribose, uracil, adenine, guanine and cytosine.

Three types of RNA's performs performs three types of different roles:

  • mRNA (messenger RNA): it provides the template for protein synthesis during translation.
  • tRNA (transfer RNA): it brings amino acids and reads the genetic code during translation.
  • rRNA (ribosomal RNA): it plays a structural and catalytic role during translation.
