Detailed Solution

Statement I is correct but statement II is incorrect

S-I: Photophosphorylation is a process that occurs during photosynthesis in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts. In the presence of light, chlorophyll and other pigments absorb photons (light energy), leading to the excitation of electrons. These excited electrons pass through a series of electron carriers in the photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI) complexes. As electrons move through the electron transport chain (ETC), protons (H+) are pumped across the thylakoid membrane from the stroma to the thylakoid lumen, creating a proton gradient. This proton gradient represents potential energy.

S-II: Energy released during the electron transport system is utilized in synthesis of ATP with help of ATP synthetase.
