Stirred tank bioreactors (STR) are the most widely used bioreactors. It is designed to ensure homogenous conditions within the vessel. It is a cylindrical vessel with a curved base. It has a sparger to supply sterile
air and a central shaft with impellers for stirring. Stirring allows uniform distribution of nutrients, oxygen and temperature.

(1) Purification of the product is part of downstream processing.

(2) Preservatives are added to the purified product during formulation to extend the shelf life.

(4) Traditionally, stirred tank bioreactors are designed with a sparger to supply sterile air. Generally, batch cultures are carried out in STR, where addition of medium and recovery of the product happen batch-wise under aerobic conditions.
