During the early months of the French Revolution, the storming of the Bastille was a crucial turning point. On July 14, 1789, a group of people primarily made up of sans-culottes, or members of the lower classes, attacked the Bastille, a castle and political jail representing the oppressiveness of France's Ancien Régime. As a result, the enraged mob besieged and demolished the Bastille.
