Detailed Solution

a) Glycolysis is the breakdown of complex carbohydrates into simpler forms, i.e. pyruvic acid. Thus, X represents glycolysis. In the absence of oxygen, pyruvic acid further converts into alcohol and carbon dioxide with less amount of energy, which is known as anaerobic respiration. Thus, Z represents anaerobic. Whereas, in the presence of oxygen, pyruvic acid converts into carbon dioxide, and water, with a large amount of energy, which is known as aerobic respiration. Thus, Y represents aerobic.

Hence, the correct option is (iii) X-Glycolysis, Y-Aerobic, Z-Anaerobic.

b) The breakdown of glucose into a three-carbon molecule called pyruvate takes place in the cytoplasm, whereas the process of aerobic respiration takes place in mitochondria.

Hence, the correct option is (ii) Cytoplasm and mitochondria, respectively.

c) The anaerobic process, i.e. Z, takes place in yeast. This process takes place in the absence of air.

Hence, the correct option is (iii) Yeast.

d) In the human body, Z(anaerobic respiration) take place in muscle cells.

Hence, the correct option is (i) In muscle cells.

e) Aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria of the cell.

Hence, the correct option is (i) Mitochondria.
